What's up, guys. I'm Adam. I'm 33 and live on the US East Coast. I'm new to the forums. I stumbled across Andy's site through twitter and liked what I read. Particularly the goal-setting article that builds off The Slight Edge. I read that book a few years ago and liked it. I re-read it recently after finding Andy's article and re-focused my goals to only focus on two things. I previously had five going at once and - predictably - I didn't make progress in any of them. Other contributing factors to my lack of progress were the facts that I didn't really care about some of the goals and that the timelines were too long. I didn't break them up into smaller goals that I could accomplish each week and month.

My current #1 goal is losing fat. I'm not fat by normal standards, but my physique doesn't do much attraction work for me. And more to the point, it doesn't look the way I want it to. The long-term goal is to lose 12 lbs by the start of June. That's purposely an easy goal to hit. I plan to accomplish that much sooner, but it's been a while since I've finished a goal I set, so I'm setting the bar at a level I know I can hit. The short-term goal associated with that is to lose 2 lbs/month. I'm currently at 174.0 lbs. I will hit 172.0 by January 30th.

#2 goal is to have more adventures. Which sounds a bit vague. I will start working through the list of "cool things that I've always wanted to try". Snowboarding, Rock-Climbing with Ropes, Travel to New Zealand and walk through Mordor, etc. The short-term goal associated with that is to take a snowboarding lesson this month. This will help relieve the social isolation caused by Corona and give me some good stories when things open up. I'll be able to tell girls I did something other than sit inside and play video games for the last year. My area isn't locked down like some other areas, but social opportunities are scarce.

I'll likely pursue dating goals once I reach my body-fat goal, unless I've underestimated the amount of weight I need to lose. I'll date in the meantime, but won't associate any goals with it. I'll re-launch my tinder profile when I've achieved my physique goals. I already lift weights and will continue doing so. I also do Jiu-Jitsu 2-3 times per week, so the main point of pursuit in my physique goals will be sticking to my diet.

Recap:
  • Reach 172.0 lbs or lower by January 30th
  • Take a Snowboarding Lesson by January 31st

Last week I just ate low carb and did not track calories. That's worked for me in the past when losing weight, but my weight actually went up a pound last week. Probably just water/glycogen, but nonetheless I'll track calories going forward.

Hey Man, I'm 5'11". I've also been working out for a few years. Diet's always been the problem for me.

Yesterday's Calories: 1863
Today's Weight: 177.0 (whoa)

Very odd spike in weight today. The human body is weird. I won't sweat it as long as it goes back down tomorrow. I have jiu-jitsu tonight so that should sweat out all my extra water and glycogen.

Body weight can fluctuate by +/- 3to5 lbs in a week. (Even more if your switching from 1 diet to another).

I just use the lowest weight I hit during a week as that week's number. Its worked very accurately for me (I've lost 50 lbs in the last year).

Here's a graph of how you're weight usually fluctuates throughout a week.

I recommend chronometer for tracking calories. It even measures nutrients and often you can scan the food package and it will pull all the data from it. I am sure you are doing it already but be sure to take the same selfie and weigh yourself at the same time every week. Weight is important but letting the mirror be your guide is the real key to optimizing your physique.

Checking your weight day by day is stupid. You should look for a pattern instead - the pattern being it droping/growing long term. You wont lose or gain a noticable weight in a day even if you starve yourself or eat twice your usual calories.

I think someone here was ploting his daily weight, but then making another plot with average weight from the last 7 weeks. Now that is something you can use to watch your progress more accurately.

Thats what I was doing @Lostcause

I took morning and evening weights every day. But only really looked at the weekly median numbers

Median is the one you want apparently for weight tracking

Seems I gave the wrong impression with my last post. Thanks for the advice, guys. I'm taking my weight every morning but I have an excel spreadsheet that I put it into. It gives the me the weekly averages and graphs it out so I can see the overall trend. I'm not concerned about a single day up or down and I'm not changing anything about my eating based on my weight being high this morning.

Last night I booked a snowboarding lesson for this Friday. My Brother and his Girlfriend are going to go skiing as well so I'll hang with them between runs.

I went snowboarding for the first time yesterday. I fell on my ass a ton, as expected, but had a blast anyway. Some of my muscle-memory from skiing transferred over to snowboarding. At the end of four hours, I graduated from the bunny hill to the easiest of the real trails. Fell four times going down, but got back up quickly and didn't hurt anything on any of the falls. My brother's girlfriend who snowboards said she was surprised at how quickly I picked it up. I'll definitely do it again.

Goal #2 for the Month: Take a snowboarding lesson by January 31st - COMPLETE.
