Sometimes when you start working on your dating life, you can feel like a complete fish out of water. You walk into a bar, a club, or even just go outside to talk to women, and suddenly your brain says, “I don’t belong here. I’m not cool enough. I’m not confident enough. I’m not the kind of guy who does this.” But feeling out of place is not proof that you should leave. It’s usually just proof that this is new.
Discomfort doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong. It means your nervous system hasn’t had enough practice yet. The way you become more comfortable in an environment is by spending time there, gently, slowly, and repeatedly. You don’t have to walk into a club for six hours and approach fifty women. You can start by standing there for ten minutes. You can sit in a busy café. You can give one stranger a compliment. You can take one tiny step and let that be enough for today.
You also don’t have to become some loud, smooth, ultra-charismatic party guy. You don’t have to transform into James Bond before women are allowed to like you. You can be nervous and still say hello. You can be awkward and still be brave. You can even be honest: “Hey, I’m a little nervous, but I thought you were cute and wanted to say hi.” That kind of honesty is often far more attractive than pretending to be perfectly confident.
A lot of fear comes from thinking that if you mess up, something terrible will happen. But if you fumble a conversation, forget what to say, speak too quietly, or get rejected, your life is still okay. You didn’t need that person’s approval five minutes before you met them, and you don’t need it five minutes after. Rejection is not a disaster. It’s just feedback, practice, and sometimes a little ego bruise – and being humbled is not the end of the world.
So this week, put yourself somewhere slightly uncomfortable. Not traumatising. Not overwhelming. Just a little outside your usual world. Go to the bar, the café, the gym class, the social meetup, or the place you’ve been avoiding. You don’t have to prove anything. You don’t have to perform. Just show up as an imperfect human being and give it a go. You don’t become confident by waiting until you feel like you belong. You become confident by showing up and discovering, “Oh… I’m allowed to be here too.”
